I was riding home after riding with a slow friend, I mean a friend who doesn’t ride quite as fast as me. I still had about 60km to go and reset the odometer. After riding for a bit, I switched over to AVG which started me on one of my regular games.
I was just starting a flat section that had ALMOST no stops. I decided to try get my AVG to XX.0 by the end of this section and was at about X(X-3).5 after having ridden a ways. (I don’t have to admit what speed I go if I just use X’s.) I was going into a slight headwind but still I saw the AVG slowly creeping up… .6,… .7,… .0, X(X-1).2. Even keeping a good speed, the digits increased slower and slower. Then I hit a 4 way stop sign that I couldn’t run or even roll through. There were actually cars at an intersection that never has any. AAAHHHHH!!!!! I was now back down to X(X-2).8. Back to the grind, watch the increase in digits, and turning the last corner of the flat section I noticed a bit of a tailwind. When I hit the light at the end, AVG read XX.1. I still had about 20km to go with no way of maintaining this speed but was glad I had reached my goal for the point I had set. The only problem was that I wasn’t at the end of the ride so the game had to continue.
The rest of the route is rolling with a hill at the end… and lots of lights. I still had to finish the game as I hated to see the digits go backward. After another 10km I had only dropped about .2. I’d hit most of the lights and was keeping pretty good speed. Then…STOP LIGHT at bottom of a hill… STOP LIGHT in the middle of a hill. Then up the final big (for me, about 200m of elevation gain), just trying to stop the digits going backward too fast. Watching the speedo and willing it to increase, darn thing wouldn’t lie for me, why wouldn’t it tell me that I can climb like a tour rider? I cursed it for not being the friend I paid it to be.
Why do the numbers go backward faster than they go forward?
In the end, not a bad average, not great but I sure worked hard.
