One of the classic components of Tai-Chi is called Cloud Hands, Move Hands Like Clouds, or Wave Hands Like Clouds, or some such variation of that. The movement implies that your hands are moving like floating clouds in a smooth and continuous fashion. I think all Tai-Chi lineages incorporate it, although it is executed differently in different schools. For instance Yang style has the palms mostly facing you, whilst the Sun style has the palms facing away. I have mentioned in the past that if you are not internalizing the martial applications of Tai-Chi then all you are doing is walking around and waving your hands in the air. Cloud Hands is no exception.

Speaking of waving your hands, its important to note the movement of the arms is initiated by the Tan T’ien. It is the movement of the waist that controls the movement of the arms. The arms however should project outward with a feeling of peng energy.
Practicing Cloud Hands as a stand-alone exercise is a great way to help perfect all of your Tai-Chi.
The martial aspect varies from school to school as well, and as is the case in many Tai-Chi movements Cloud Hands can have multiple applications. Cloud Hands is commonly used to intercept an opponents attempt to strike or grab you. This affords you the opportunity to either deflect them away from you, catch their arm in a lock with the possible intent of breaking it, or to direct your own punch or push to their now exposed side.
