I am not usually one for gimmicks so please bear with me on this one…
This is a really tight outfit; albeit one with a gimmick. The shtick is this… Led Zeppelin songs played in a reggae style, sung by an Elvis impersonator. Yes you read that correctly. A gimmick? Yes. Quirky? Yes. Good? Very. These guys first cut vinyl in 1989, and they are still around today. Not without some personnel changes along the way mind you. I can’t for the life of me recall when I first heard of these guys, but I liked them right away.
I do recall when I saw them live however. It was in a small bar on the west side of Tucson, Arizona. I went there with another music buff and climbing partner of mine. Yes…the good old Desert Mountaineer. Big time music fan; bet ya never would have figured eh? If I recollect correctly this gig had the early standard lineup for the band; Including: Carl Jah, Ed Zeppelin, Butt Boy, Charlie Haj, and of course Tortelvis.
What a wild show. Man these cats could play. I don’t remember the set-list, but they played a lot of familiar tunes including Black Dog. I do vividly recall everyone in the audience doing ‘the claw’ along with Tortelvis.
They are still around and still touring, check em out…
