Episode 4….
This is a pretty short and lame post, but I wanted to complete the series, and it does reflect reality…
The last 12 weeks of this training plan was supposed to actually show an increase in the volume of easy workouts to about 90%, and with the 10% left over as hard hill work along with some specific training. But… life gets in the way and things did not go exactly as planned. This is where flexibility comes into play. As I mentioned in an earlier article, there is an old saying about those who live by the sword, also die by the sword. I have always thought that the same holds true for project planning. Those who live by the plan, die by the plan.
The wheels came off the cart in my plan, so I’ve had to adapt as best as possible. As I write this I have two full weeks of training time left, as well as a week to taper. It’s not a lot of time but I feel that my base is pretty well developed, and should suffice for the task at hand.
I only got about one third of the way through my hill repeats, which was supposed to have been a cornerstone for me. I have been able to replace those with some long hill runs, which I believe are having a positive effect. I had also been expecting to do a lot more box steps with a pack. Those became replaced with a variety of squats, and some ruck walks; But not really enough for my liking.
I have been getting in some long trail runs, and I have been climbing in my mountain boots. I have also been greasing the groove with calf work. I will definitely publish a post climb review to examine all this training nonsense in respect to it being adequate preparation for an alpine objective or not.
Stay tuned…
